Bayners Res : Cambridge Sunday League Div Four match

GOLDING WONDER STRIKE!

NST STRIKERS recorded a debut win in the Cambridge & District League Sunday League, but had to come from behind twice to take the Division Four points against fellow newcomers Bayners Reserves.

First, Paul Golding dragged NST level and then Dan Jarvis equalised for a second time just before the break, before second-half strikes from Simon Bubien and Jarvis, with another, finally killed the game off.

In both their friendly wins NST conceded the first goal, it was a common problem last season, and Sunday was no exception.

NST were made to pay for a sluggish start as Bayners Reserves, playing down the slope, scored with a speculative effort from 30 yards on 20 minutes.

With the home side’s midfield struggling to make any sort of impression on the game and the Sawston Village College pitch making it difficult to play any sort of fluid football, NST levelled 10 minutes later with a goal conjured from nothing.

Golding, making his debut for the senior side, looked to have few options when he picked the ball up 20 yards from goal, but caught Banyers by surprise when he drilled a shot into the corner of the net when nothing looked on.

The goal was enough to help the home side splutter into life, but instead of taking control, it was Banyers who struck again, when poor marking from a corner saw the visitors head a second.

NST were level before the interval, when Jarvis broke clear and although his first effort was blocked, he netted the rebound from close range.

After the interval, NST slowly started to take a grip on midfield as skipper Jamie Campbell dragged his side back into the driving seat.

As the game opened up, the home side started to create chances. Livewire Ross Norrie started to cause problems down the right and Jarvis and Golding gave the visiting defence a few headaches.

Jarvis looked to have put NST ahead, but his cross shot was somehow cleared before it crossed the line and the visiting keeper pulled off some smart stops.

NST finally edged ahead just after the hour when full-back Simon Bubien, the smallest player on the pitch, ghosted into the box and headed home a corner from the right, to put the home side ahead with a rare goal.

The introduction of Tom Martin just after the vital third goal, gave NST a more solid look and the home side, who had to survive a late goalmouth scramble, finally scored a fourth in the closing stages to make the game safe.

With Banyers tiring, Golding’s astute ball found Jarvis, who finished coolly notching his second of the game.
